Slenderman is coming!! symposium on the internet legend, hoax and attempted murder

slenderman(懒得翻译,以下这段抄自百度百科)

PUBLIC TALK TO ADDRESS INTERNET PHENOMENON: SLENDER MAN IS COMING!A phenomenon that is sometimes called the "first internet ghost story" will be the subject of discussion at a public talk scheduled for Monday, March 23 at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

A collection of folklorists – experts in everyday cultural creations and online communities – will present their Slender Man research 7-9 p.m. in the lecture theatre of the Arts and Science Extension, AS2026.

In addition to being called an internet ghost story, Slender Man has been cited as the inspiration for an attempted murder of a minor in Wisconsin. How and why stories are created and why some of them lead to murder are some of the topics that will be discussed by presenters Dr. John Bodner (Grenfell Campus MUN), Dr. Trevor Blank (State University of New York at Potsdam), Dr. Andrea Kitta (East Carolina University) and Jeffrey Tolbert (Indiana University).

First created by users on the Something Awful internet forums, the Slender Man is most commonly depicted in photoshopped pictures as an unnaturally tall, skinny humanoid with a white, faceless head, who is dressed curiously-given his tendency to lurk in forests-in a black business suit and tie. As an example of the communal processes of creating culture online, Slender Man has appeared in a wide range of contexts. While Slender Man's fictional status was never in question to most online communities, in May 2014 two 12-year-old girls in Waukesha, Wisconsin, stabbed their friend 19 times in his name.

"In the months following the stabbing, Slender Man has become the focus of major news media as they seek to understand the phenomenon," said Dr. John Bodner, faculty member, Social/Cultural Studies Program, and organizer of the March 23 talk. He and his fellow speakers will investigate how and why various news organizations and parent groups called for various changes in children’s internet access and even criminal or economic sanction on the original creators and various websites.

As a hoax, real world inspiration for crime and creative activity for a group of digital artists, cosplayers, youtubers (filmmaker who distribute on youtube), and writers, the Slender Man phenomenon has important implications for how we understand contemporary culture, the internet, tradition, childhood practices, and the future of scary stories themselves.

The public talk is supported by Memorial University's Scholarship in the Arts, as well as the vice-president (Grenfell Campus) academic. Everyone is welcome. Light snacks and beverages including beer and wine will be served.
